We come to church to worship God and to celebrate with others God's holy Word. God's Word comes to us through the reading of Scriptures, our Baptism, Holy Communion, and the preaching and teaching of Christian leaders.
The worship service is often called "the liturgy," which means "the work of the people." During the service the pastor, worship leaders, and choir lead the people in Scripture readings, hymns, and prayers. The congregation responds with certain words, prayers, and hymns. This is the "work" we, the people, do.
We are a congregation proclaiming the good news of God's love in Jesus Christ and forgiveness of our sins by faith in him. There is no action or penitence that we can perform that will take away our sins. Our sins are forgiven through the grace of God. This forgiveness is a gift from God that we can never earn, but is freely given through love. We are justified by God's grace through our faith.
We believe that Christ is present in the sacrament of Baptism and the sacrament of Holy Communion. We see God in all creation, but most especially in the water of Baptism and in the bread and wine of Holy Communion, which we also call the Eucharist (from the Greek for "thanksgiving").
Our worship follows the seasons of a church-year calendar. The seasons are: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. The order of worship includes the reading and proclamation of Scripture and the ritual drama of the Eucharistic meal, Holy Communion. Our liturgy expresses three basic aspects of the Lutheran faith. We are catholic, following the form of the universal church and uniting with the inclusive Christian family. We are evangelical, proclaiming that God is gracious, loving, merciful, and forgiving. And we are reforming. We do not hesitate to change parts of the traditional worship service if a new way will help the liturgy to proclaim the Gospel more clearly.
Lutheranism is not a system of doctrines as much as it is a way of seeing, hearing, teaching, and following the God we know in Jesus Christ.
