Our Church
Calvary Lutheran Church is a member congregation of the
Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) serving the Union County,
New Jersey
area for over 75 years. The congregation's members come from the
Cranford -
Westfield area and the
surrounding towns of central Union
County.
Calvary has been recognized in the community for its strong social
responsibility, its excellent Christian education program and its
focus on music.
Our Beliefs
- We are a congregation that believes that the Word of God is a
"living word" that confronts us and calls us to make changes in our
lives. When Jesus said to the fishermen and others, "Follow me,"
they knew that saying "Yes," would change the rest of their lives.
And so it is with us. Saying yes to Christ means our lives are
changed forever.
- We are a congregation that proclaims the good news of God's love
in Jesus Christ and the forgiveness of our sins by faith and our
faith in him. There is no action or penance that we can perform that
will take away our sins. Our sins are forgiven through the grace of
God. This forgiveness is a gift from God that we can never earn, but
is freely given through love. We are justified by God's grace
through our faith.
- We are a congregation that believes that Christ is present in the
sacrament of Baptism and the sacrament of Holy Communion. We see God
in all creation, but most especially in the water of Baptism and in
the bread and wine of Holy Communion (Eucharist, which is Greek for
"Thanksgiving").
